On April 1, 1960, a small factory in Northamptonshire, England, pushed its first pair of boots off the line. Called the Dr. Martens 1460, this footwear would change the fashion and footwear industries forever.

Now, 65 years later, the brand returns to that original release with a luxurious, painstakingly handcrafted tribute. This reissue, the Dr. Martens 1460 Love Letter, might be the finest pair of boots the brand has ever released.

Give ’em the boot

As mentioned, the original 1460 was released on April 1, 1960, which is how it got its name (1 for the day, 4 for the month of April and 60 for the year). This new edition is meant to pay tribute to its timeless legacy, which it does in more ways than one.

For starters, the 1460 Love Letter is produced in the UK, honoring the brand’s tradition of craftsmanship and its original release. It’s also made by hand instead of mass-produced on a machine-driven assembly line.

As a finishing touch, each boot tongue is stamped with a “1.4.60,” signifying the launch date of the original Dr. Martens 1460.

To further its homage, it’s also limited to exactly 1,460 pairs. Unfortunately, that makes it a pretty rare release. They’re likely to sell out quickly. Once they’re gone, they’re gone for good.

That said, those in the know will want to get their hands on these boots, especially once they discover how well-made they are.

Doc save the king

These spectacular boots are crafted from C. F. Stead’s full-grain Classic Calf leather, offering exceptional luxury and material quality. The boots’ archive-inspired contrast stitching offsets the burgundy colorway.

Furthermore, the leather is designed to age as you wear the boots, with its blend of natural waxes and oils helping to apply a unique patina over time. Even the boots’ signature heel loop — with its iconic “Bouncing Soles” text — is made of the same leather.

To complement the rich red leather, the boots are fitted with matching laces and antique gold eyelets, offering even more depth and character.

Finally — likely to the joy of Doc lovers everywhere — the boots have the same Goodyear Welted construction that’s been a hallmark of the brand’s footwear for as long as they’ve been in production — complete with the signature yellow stitching.
